About these awards

German Design Award

The German Design Award is presented by the German Design Council (Rat für Formgebung), a non-profit foundation set up in 1953 by resolution of the German Bundestag. Launched in 2012 as the Council's leading honour, it succeeds the federal design prizes the Council had run since 1969 and recognises projects launched within the previous five years, including architecture.

ICONIC AWARDS

The ICONIC AWARDS are the German Design Council's international competition for architecture and the built environment, covering buildings, interiors, products and communication. First held in 2013, entries are judged by an independent jury of architects, interior designers and design specialists.

Red Dot Design Award

Run by Red Dot in Essen, Germany, the award traces its history to 1955, when a jury first met to evaluate the best designs of the time. Entries are selected by expert juries, and winning work is shown in the Red Dot Design Museums in Essen, Singapore and Xiamen. "Red Dot: Best of the Best" is the competition's highest distinction, reserved for the best entries in a category.

iF Design Award

The iF Design Award has been held since 1954 by iF Design, founded in Hannover in 1953 alongside the Hannover trade fair. An international jury (129 designers from 21 countries for 2026) first preselects entries online, then decides the winners at a physical final jury.

Architizer A+Awards

The A+Awards are run by Architizer, a New York–based online platform for architects. Jurors from design and related fields nominate five finalists per category; a Jury Winner is then chosen by the jury, separately from the public-vote Popular Choice award. Winners are published in Architizer's annual book The World's Best Architecture.

IIDA Best of Asia Pacific Design Awards

Organised by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), based in Chicago, and established in 2013 for interior projects located in the Asia-Pacific region. A jury of design professionals selects at most two winners per category and may choose not to award a category.

World Architecture Festival (WAF)

First held in 2008, WAF is a live awards festival: shortlisted projects are presented in person to judging panels and an open audience, and category winners are chosen on the day. Being shortlisted means the project was selected from the year's entries to present at the festival.

INSIDE World Festival of Interiors

INSIDE is the interiors festival held alongside the World Architecture Festival; the 2017 edition took place in Berlin, with projects judged live in the same format as WAF.

Architecture MasterPrize

Organised by the Los Angeles–based Farmani Group as the sister programme of the International Design Awards, the Architecture MasterPrize is open to architects worldwide across architecture, interiors and landscape. Winners are selected by a jury of architects and industry leaders.

Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Awards

Organised by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design with the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies since the mid-2000s, the awards cover new buildings, landscape and planning projects worldwide. Submissions are judged anonymously by a jury of practitioners, educators and critics, and winners are exhibited and published.

ArchDaily Building of the Year

Run since 2009 by ArchDaily, a widely read architecture website, the award is decided by its readers: they nominate projects published on ArchDaily that year, the five most nominated in each category become finalists, and readers then vote for the winner.
